An Interview with... Trashy Crafter

One of my favorite instructional teaching tools is children’s books. One of my favorite places to shop is Etsy!

Well, magic seemed to happen when I came across a seller named, Trashy Crafter, who turns old books into recycled {beautiful} jewelry!

Look at this bracelet I got made from sheet music.

It was even packaged in this cute map wrapping paper!

Now, onto the interview!

I asked her 6 questions to get to know her better!

Q1: How did you come up with the idea for turning books into jewelry?

A1: I have always been a crafter, my grandma would always allow my sister and I to make crafts after our homework was done each day after school.  But it was when my Mom and I saw all the damaged and outdated book being thrown away, it was really sad, and even now, we get books at thrift stores that are on the clearance shelf because no one wants them since they are ripped or scribbled in.  We took the books home the first time and I remembered my 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Bryant, she taught us how to roll magazines into beads, so I made it with book pages, and it looked so awesome, thats how we got started.

Here's a {cute} pic with Kim and her Mom!

Q2: When did the business start?

A2: We started about 3 years ago.

Here's a peak inside of the business...

Q3. Where are you located?

A3: We are located in sunny San Diego.

And... a pic of the bracelets ready to get
packaged for shipment.

Q4: How do you find your books?

A4: We find books all over the place, sometimes in boxes near dumpsters, sometimes they are donated to us when they are old and falling apart, sometimes we buy them at thrift store clearance bins, or even get them from outside libraries in cardboard boxes.

Q5: Where can people send books if they'd like to donate them?

A5: If anyone would like to donate books to us, we would love it.  I live in a tiny one bedroom apartment at the moment and space is extremely limited, so what typically happens is you can shoot me an email letting me know what books you have, due to the lack of space I can only take the most popular well known books for the most part, but I am always on the hunt for atlases and road maps because thats what I used to wrap my jewelry.  Shoot me an email at and let me know what you have, if you have some stuff I could really use often times I will give you an earring or bracelet set in exchange :)

It looks like Kim's Mom helps look for books too!

Q6: What is your favorite book?

A6: My favorite book, well that's really hard.  As a child it was Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss, in middle school and high school it was history books and now it's mostly business books, my all time favorite is "Think and Grow Rich" by napoleon hill, my day job is marketing so nerdy business books make me happy lol.

Now I know what you're saying! I want one too!
